For Eastern Aegean Islands, accessibility is a determinant factor of their tourism development. Chios, as a particular case study is heavily dependent on Athens International Airport for its inbound and outbound tourism. On the other hand, International Airport of Izmir, located much closer to the island, serves several european destinations. Crossing the borders in an intermodal transport concept may lead to a substantial air travel alternative for Chios Island, improving its accessibility and thus its tourism development. A discrete choice analysis, in primary research data regarding travel scenarios from Chios to ten main European airports-destinations, shows a potential trend of new traffic flows in addition to the existing ones.

Two countries, one sea; destinations offering a similar tourism product; five Greek islands and three Turkish coastal cities located in the Eastern Aegean area. Eight airports and ferry connections set the structure of the region's transport system. Educational Tourism is gaining ground as a new growing form of alternative and special – interest form of tourism. At least 20% of total international travelers comprised from students, raising the student tourism market in a lucrative billion industry. The economic and other implications of inbound organized Study Tourism, in hosting communities in Greece, have been examined through a research on E.I.L.C. Erasmus Students in this paper. A representative sample of incoming Erasmus students had been interviewed by the researcher to understand the economic and other implications they have on the local communities they decide to study, the attitudes they form towards Greece, after their participation in the language course enriched with educative and cultural experiences, the personal development they achieved, their incentives and criteria under with they choose the study destination.

Tourism is a global high consumption industry with important sustainability implications. Given the strong link between tourism and transport, this research analyses the opinion of local authorities and stakeholders to help promote sustainable transport in the touristic islands of Chios and Lesvos, in the Aegean Sea, in Greece. The attitudes of stakeholders towards the current state of tourism, future targets of the tourism industry and ways that green transport may assist the local tourism industry achieve these targets, were analyzed. Literature review regarding the term of airport catchment area vary according to the location examined in every research. The results present the same degree of variety as airport catchment area seems to have the ability to fluctuate depending on the external factors of each airport case. Almost 15 years after air transport deregulation in Europe and European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) as its consequence and Low Cost Carriers (LCCs) as its genuine product have changed the image of the air transport market in Europe. Rhodes is the second busiest airport located on an island in Greece and third in the country, as far as international traffic is concerned. The establishment of the European Common Aviation Area in conjunction with the introduction of low cost air services to the island in recent years is likely to change the perception of the destination which has been a very popular tourist destination for over thirty years. The paper examines the concentration patterns at both spatial and industrial levels analysing the traffic patterns to Rhodes over the recent years using measures such as the Herfindahl - Hirschmann and the Gini index. These are calculated at both origin/destination country and city pair levels as well as at a carrier level. Correlations among the indexes are also discussed. The paper concludes with policy suggestions for the future and portfolio strategies to be implemented at the destination.

Thermal tourism is a dynamic and rapidly growing market on the European scene, where Germany leads with an estimated market size of €26 billion annually. Further to the accession of Eastern European countries into the European Union, many thermal spas in the area entered into contracts with health insurance funds in Germany. Greece, on the contrary, has not taken full advantage of its thermal tourism market growth potential, considering the abundant related resources in the country. With the aim to highlight the characteristics of hydrotherapy allowances in Greece and Germany, primary and secondary data research was conducted in twelve major health insurance funds, i.e. six in Greece and six in Germany. The European Union (EU) introduced the third and most fundamental package of air transport liberalisation in 1997, establishing free pricing and full access rights of EU airlines to all intra-European routes including cabotage. As a result, the European Common Aviation Area (ECAA) became a reality. On the other hand, routes between non EU and EU countries are still based on the standard regulatory principles of international aviation related among others to airline designation rights and country of origin rules. This paper examines the degree of interdependence between airline network planning and tourism flows using a theoretical framework based on airline network planning and tourism geography. From an empirical perspective, the case of a Greek new network carrier entering the market in early 2009, namely Athens Airways, is examined focusing on two of its seasonal domestic routes heavily dependent on leisure traffic. The two city-pairs to be studied involve Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, and two of the most popular Greek tourism destinations, namely Mykonos and Santorini. Air transport is a prominent sector of today’s service economy. It comprises the aviation industry (airlines, airports and ancillary services) and the civil aerospace sector (aircraft manufacturing and maintenance). In addition to its well-established linkages with local, regional and national economies, civil aviation is explicitly related to tourism. Since the mid-1990s wine tourism has emerged as a strong and growing area of special interest tourism in the world; nevertheless wine tourism in Greece is in its infancy. This study presents the benefits of wine tourism for Greek wineries and the surrounding communities. In order to present the potential of wine tourism development in Greece, a quantitative research was undertaken and Greek wineries were asked to complete a questionnaire. The study recommends that policies need to be created at the regional and national level so that wine tourism will attract tourists of high level education in the future.

Tourism is a decisively important productive activity for many destination areas with significant impact on the economy, on society, the environment and culture. At the same time, however, the complexity of the tourism phenomenon turns tourism into a field of conflict and opposition among the stakeholders, and among public authorities and the private sector in particular, over the structural problems in tourism development. Possible ways to achieve a concurrence of opinion and synergy are being sought in models of viable and sustainable tourism development and in integrated quality management policies.

The aim of this paper is the analysis of the situation of General Aviation (GA) in Greece and its possible implication for tourism in the country. In which way i.e. the GA can, directly, constitute a form of special interest tourism and, indirectly, raise and contribute to the aid of other tourism forms and expressions, such as professional and educational tourism. What is examined substantially is the case of Recreational General Aviation as a form of special interest tourism through the dynamics of the motive for it and the specific characteristics of the target group in question.

Air transport has always been affected and influenced by spatio temporal factors such as geographical and economic features. The island of Crete, Greece accommodates three airports and accounts for over 50% of Greece’s international tourist arrivals. The paper discusses the distribution, asymmetry and evolution of countries and cities on both international and domestic passenger traffic, as well as domestic cargo traffic. The evolutionary patterns of concentration have been analysed using a number economic geography indices such as the Herfindahl-Hirschmann Index. The tourism industry comprises a number of different sectors, including air transport and accessibility in general. Tourist expenditure may have a significant positive impact on the local economy.
